Before becoming an MP in 2005, Nia Griffith spent 20 years teaching languages in comprehensive schools, and five years as Estyn inspector and local authority adviser for modern languages and European awareness. She has been a chief examiner for GCSE and A level Italian. As well as contributing to the Italian textbook Ciao, she has also written 100 ideas for teaching languages.
Since being elected to represent Llanelli in 2005, she has served in the Labour Government as Parliamentary Private Secretary first to Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, working on issues including the Climate Change Bill, the Marine Bill and flooding, and then to Harriet Harman MP, working on the Equalities Bill.
Since 2010 she has served on the shadow front bench, as a shadow business minister, then Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Shadow Defence Secretary.
Nia has continued to take an interest in languages in parliament, and currently co-chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages.
