CILT, the National Centre for Languages is the government's
centre of expertise and UK Standards Setting Body for languages. The organisation's mission is to promote a greater capability in languages amongst all sectors of the UK population.
The National Centre for Languages was formed in 2003 through the merger of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research and the Languages National Training Organisation. The creation of the new organisation was announced as part of the Government's National Languages Strategy. It plays a key role in managing national initiatives in support of language capability and the implementation of the National Strategy as well as offering a wide range of services for teachers, learners, researchers, users and providers of language services and the business community.
