Professor Jack Lonergan FRSA FCIL, Director of Adroit Ltd.

Professor Jack Lonergan FRSA FCIL is Director of Adroit Ltd. He entered the world of translation and interpreting as an expatriate applied linguist but unqualified in these specialist areas. However, his appointment to the University of Westminster in 1989 to teach translation classes (German to English) and take responsibility for specialist courses and projects has led to deep involvement with, and admiration for, the professionals in translation and interpreting.

At the university, Jack Lonergan ran a public service interpreting project funded by the Nuffield Foundation, producing the video Interpreting Matters for new court interpreters. A project in China led to radical syllabus re-design, moving from gathering encyclopaedic knowledge to a skills-based approach, which led to the print and audio materials Interpreting for Tomorrow.

Later funding from EU AsiaLink saw four universities (Hanoi, Xiamen, Dublin City and Westminster) producing DVD materials called Interpreting Asia Interpreting Europe, designed to introduce Vietnamese and Chinese graduates in English to consecutive interpreting.

Jack Lonergan retired from the University of Westminster in January 2005 as Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics. He now acts as a consultant on international projects and media production.
