His extensively cited research (around 150 publications including 7 books, 20 journal articles and 16 book chapters; more than 350 citations per year) covers areas such as anaphora resolution, machine translation, automatic generation of multiple-choice tests, automatic summarisation, centering, translation memory, bilingual term extraction, question answering and computer-aided language learning. His research output (and that of his research group) was highlighted in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2001) panel feedback report as of a 'standard of international excellence'. Mitkov is author of the monograph Anaphora resolution (Longman) and sole editor of the Oxford Handbook of Computational Linguistics (Oxford University Press). Current prestigious projects include his role as Editor-in-Chief of the Natural Language Processing book series of John Benjamins publishers, Consulting Editor of Oxford University Press' publications in Computational Linguistics and Editor of the Journal of Natural Language Engineering (Cambridge University Press). Dr. Mitkov has been invited as keynote speaker at a number of international conferences, has acted as Programme Chair of various well-known international conferences on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Translation and Anaphora Resolution including RANLP, the annual Aslib 'Translating and the Computer' conference and the conference on Multilingual and Translation Technologies. He is also asked on a regular basis to review for leading international funding bodies and organisations, leading journals and conferences or serve as member of Programme Committees or Editorial Boards. Prof. Mitkov is / has been external examiner of many postgraduate/PhD/Mphil dissertations and curricula including the Master's programs related to Translation Technology at Imperial College, London, Swansea University, Exeter University and the University of East Anglia. Prof. Mitkov has considerable external funding to his credit and is currently managing several large projects, some of which funded by UK research councils, the EC as well as UK and USA industry. Ruslan Mitkov received his MSc from the Humboldt University in Berlin, his PhD from the Technical University in Dresden and worked as a Research Professor at the Institute of Mathematics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. Dr. Mitkov is Professor of Computational Linguistics and Language Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton which he joined in 1995 and where he set up the Research Group in Computational Linguistics. The group is known for its innovative and cutting-edge application-orientated research and has emerged as an internationally leading unit in applied Natural Language Processing. In addition to being Head of this research group, Prof. Mitkov is also Director of the Research Institute in Information and Language Processing.
