Align this!

Marek_Pawelec_800Translators love reference material, because it can save us a lot of time and effort. Unfortunately most reference documents have a nasty habit of being monolingual. How very inconsiderate!  Because of that, we have to spend more time searching for the right terms and phrases. We know that there is that “alignment” thingy, but it’s time-consuming and unreliable, so it makes the whole thing counterproductive, right?

Actually, no. It used to be that way, but modern CAT tools make alignment a breeze (once you prepare the files right). So why not use the feature? You already paid for it.

The masterclass will cover techniques for file preparation (HTML, PDF, Word and Excel), alignment and efficient use of aligned material (including term extraction, term base creation and terminology import) in Trados Studio 2014 and memoQ 2014 along with general productivity tips and tricks, based on two broad scenarios:

  1. Translation based on monolingual source and target reference files (e.g. EU regulations, reference manual in PDF)
  2. Update of monolingual target document based on edited source with tracked changes, including verification of mandatory terminology (based on EMA QRD templates used in drug approval procedures)

This masterclass is aimed at translators of all levels of technical expertise, who want to use their resources more efficiently, even those who do not use Trados Studio or memoQ: most of the content will cover work outside those two tools (mainly using MS office and freeware tools).
