Like the sculptor revealing their own likeness from what starts out as a smooth block of stone, we can, if we so choose, identify the translator we want to be among the many hundreds of options facing us, from texts to specialisms to rates to clients, and choose the path best suited to our own personalities, interests, inspirations, working needs and personal situations, until we create a working profile that’s a perfect likeness of ourselves.
However, above and beyond mechanical solutions, this depends more than we think on our values, attitudes and beliefs, self-knowledge, and awareness. And on a realisation of how free we are as freelancers, which is not always obvious to all, buffeted between the demands of clients and racing from text to text.
Via a mystery metaphor (to be revealed on the day!) the session will look in turn at some of the deeper unexamined and unexplored beliefs we carry with us as people and as professionals. It will also touch on our attitudes in our daily dealings with clients and colleagues and examine where these may be helping us progress or holding us back.
The more practical side will focus on those areas where we can make changes in our professional lives and on the questions we need to be asking, before exploring specific ways in which we can provide the solutions to our own questions and move closer to our ideal job.
In summary, this masterclass will offer a series of insights and tools to help us work towards a clearer vision of ourselves, our profession and the future that’s within our grasp. The session will be interactive and vary between input, pair and/or group activities and plenary discussions and no doubt provide a few laughs along the way.
