Translators Without Borders

TWB_button_color_hi (6)Translators Without Borders will have a table at the ITI Conference.  Please come by and find out about the volunteer positions we are currently seeking to fill.

Background

Traducteurs sans Frontières (TSF) was founded in 1993 by Lori Thicke and Ros Smith-Thomas to link the world’s translators to vetted NGOs that focus on health, nutrition and education.

Today TSF’s American sister non-profit organization, Translators without Borders (TWB), assists in translating more than two million words per year for NGOs such as Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders), Médecins du Monde, Action Against Hunger, Oxfam US and Handicap International. Here are some of the organization’s highlights from 2014:

  • 33,000 hours of donated time in 2014.
  • 3,000 volunteer translators focusing on health, crisis and educational content.
  • 111 language pairs including major languages like Arabic and French, but also critical regional languages like Krio for Sierra Leone, Hausa and Cebuano.
  • 20 million+ speakers of seven West African languages reached with Ebola messages, posters and announcements.
  • 160 partner non-profits focused on development and humanitarian aid.
  • 20 community translators trained in an exciting new program in East and West Africa.
  • The first ever crisis relief translation network developed and used in Kenya, West Africa and the Philippines (Words of Relief).

But this is not even enough. We are attempting to increase access to health, crisis and education content for millions of people around the world – there is always more to translate. There are literally thousands more organizations that need help for critical communications.

We do most of our work through the TWB Workspace. The words are all translated by vetted, professional translators around the world who work directly with our approved non-profits.  Most jobs are picked up by a translator in 15 minutes or less. The workspace is continually improved with new capabilities, and capacity continues to grow.

How can you help?

Obviously we need translators, for a wide variety of language pairs.  If you have the ITI MITI qualification, TWB will accept you with no further screening.

If you can help, please fill in the Other Volunteer’ Application Form.
