If you are coming from London, consider breaking your journey into 2 or 3 as you may be able to get lower fares for, for example, London to Peterborough and then Peterborough to Newcastle. Or go via Sheffield or Leeds. Cheap advance tickets between major stations tend to sell out quickly.

From London, consider travelling with Grand Central to Sunderland and then getting local transport to Newcastle (a hop and a skip away).

Consider flying from Heathrow or a regional airport. Flights from Gatwick will stop in March.
