Hi everyone! My name is Andrey Bystrov, I come from Russia but have lived in Kiev, Ukraine for the past year and a half.My translation career began in the late ’90s; I have since worked for a number of different employers, both in office and from home. I worked at BBC Monitoring in Moscow and Kiev, and also translated for a number of Russian aerospace-related magazines. Aviation is one of my specialisms, as well as a favourite hobby. I have recently passed my ITI qualification exams in the subject (English to Russian and Russian to English).
I first joined ITI in 2012, while doing my MA in Applied Translation Studies at the University of Leeds. At some point after graduation I moved to Ukraine. Kiev is a predominantly Russian-speaking city, and Ukrainian is quite easy for a Russian speaker to pick up. It is also a very beautiful, rich and melodious language. I have been attending Ukrainian classes for some time now to improve my spoken and written skills. People in the west of the country do not necessarily understand or speak Russian or English, and I’d love to see more of those parts this coming summer (I have only been to Lviv so far, which is a magnificent city).
I’ve been to two ITI conferences so far, in Edinburgh and Bristol, and both were fantastic and fun. I am looking forward to seeing you all in Newcastle soon.
Hello Andrey,
I am starting out as a freelance translator from Russian and French to English. I hope to meet you at the conference.
Kind regards,
Gina Dark
